The power of banners in a Boys & Girls Club:
The Mount Vernon Club in New York state always had college banners on display, representing paths to higher education taken by its alumni. This visual reminder made a lasting impression on the young Denzel Washington. “It was the first time I imagined far-off colleges and that I could possibly go to one,” Washington said. “It made you strive for something better, something obtainable, because the banners were there. I thought, ‘if other people can get there, maybe I can, too’.” The banner of Washington’s own alma mater, Fordham University, now has its place in the Club’s college lineup.
